So, tomorrow Justice League: Doom is available for download on XBox and PS3, and it is officially released next Tuesday for Blu-ray and other media types.  I will be buying my copy.

In the meantime, I was browsing the interwebs and while there are several pirated YouTube copies of the film in its entirety, I avoided them.  I want my virgin experience to be on the big screen in my darkened living room.

HOWEVER, I came across this one clip which teased my SS desires.  Enjoy!

So I've been hugely busy lately as you can see by my lack of reviews.  I'm teaching a class that's kicking my tail, BUT I'm LOVING it.  However, before bed last night I managed to squeeze in an hour for the new Green Lantern: The Animated Series on Cartoon Network.

As I watched, I thought to myself, "This is a better plot than the film that came out in June.  Maybe they should have gone with this script for the live action."  It had a great balance of "origin" explanation within it to appeal to the new fan, but it jumped into a completely involved storyline.  Impressive.  Of course, I was a bit disappointed in the lack of female characters. At least they included Carol Ferris.  I've included some very amateurish shots of her here.

While not in the SS role, introducing her early on sets the stage for having SS as a recurring character if they want (note the violet hues in almost any "Carol" scene).  They started right off the bat introducing Red Lanterns for a violent conflict, so I'm insure including the SS Corps won't be far behind.  Got to enjoy the conflict of the love interest.

I'll be interested to see how they mesh Star Sapphire with the animation style.  I've never been a fan of this kind of animation before, but as I continued to watch, it continued to grow on me and by the end of the hour, I was recruited.  It's still not my favorite, but it's not my least.  And I'll surely continue watching.

I've known for a long time that I wanted SS as a permanent, daily reminder, but I could never find the right art.  Finally, pushing 40, I decided to go for it last Spring.  I tracked down an artist through many recommendations and sat through many a session, but am happy with the results. Yes, I made some concessions based on my love for the female body and my other obsession with pinups, but hey, it's MY arm, right? (Sorry for the black box, but this is a family friendly site).

There are two SS components from this week's GL: New Guardians that I wanted to bring up today.

Fatality - While she's not my favorite SS, Fatality really holds her own, especially in this new series.  When fighting with lanterns of all other colors, she kicks the most ass.  She completely exercises her crystallizing matrix power to neutralize other lanterns, both red and green in this issue.  I love this strategy. In doing so, she dodges the attack of the Indigo Lantern. 

The other thing I love is how she explains her name and behavior to the Indigo Lantern who questions her "qualifications" in the violet corps.  Her response, "There's nothing crueler than a Love spurned."  So true.

Kyle - I've always thought about the male Star Sapphire, and even this week a gent on a FB group I follow (yes, A.D.S.) mentioned the same thing.  It's like he was reading the writers' minds.  This week, donning a ring of every color, Kyle Rayner becomes some "Super Lantern," but of course, what do I notice most?  The SS part of his uniform. With Halloween and all, this may be quite the inspiration.  Given all of the Justice League members I saw last night, I may work on something like this next year.

So for the year to come, I'll keep this costume idea in mind and remember,

SS: DOOM!

Star Sapphire Saturday!

So the trailer for the new Justice League: DOOM was previewed at CCNY last week and our favorite violet starlet is featured as GL's nemesis. This takes me back to those days as a kids watching the Challenge of the Superfriends. I always loved the episodes that dealt with the Legion of Doom.

Now, Going just from the trailer, I'm a little confused why the chose SS as GL's counterpart.  Don't get me wrong, I'm very excited to see her, especially sporting the slightly risque, modified, Ivan Reis-designed Blackest Night outfit. However, Sapphire's fight has always been motivated by, driven by, fueled by love.  I hardly see a monetary carrot being the appropriate bait for her to want to destroy GL and the rest of the Justice League.  This fight is more about hatred.  Maybe they should have called in Atrocitous instead.

Despite that, I'm glad she's getting out there into more mainstream venues.  Maybe someday she'll get a book or a movie of her own (yes, I keep saying that). Until next week...

Now, Blake Lively was not the best in the role of Carol Ferris, but with a little work, she might be better.  If ever they get a green light for a sequel, she needs a little more BAM to pull off Star Sapphire.  I hope she brings it, because not even Ryan Reynolds' fine ass was enough to carry this film.

But I love the hints that they placed in the movie to give those in the know the impression, the hope, that there would be a sequel and our favorite Ferris would be highlighted. In literature these hints are called foreshadowing.  And there were plenty of them I sought out like little gold coins.

Her flight call sign is Sapphire (Duh).  If you couldn't catch that hint, you should go home.

Her helmet has her call sign, but on the other side it also has the star symbol, very much like the one on the waist of the SS costume.

At one point, Hector Hammond is pining away for Carol and reading an article on her in the Business section of the Coast City rag. The headline reads, "Rising Star Carol Ferris positioned to take reins at Ferris."  That Star is rising alright.  Right on up to Zamaron.

And of course, she looks good in purple.  I can't imagine they would have gone through the whole movie without putting her in at least one purple outfit.  They did, and it looks great on her. Unfortunately the pic doesn't do her justice.  Just makes her look like she's got bad acne.

So I'm a collectible fan, and I'll buy almost any collectible related to my favorite characters.  But then I came across this.

Ame-comi puts together a line of statues of comic book women.  Most of them are ok.  They have that Sailor Moon look and that slightly demure quality about them which I dislike about anime.  Not to mention the huge eyes.

But this one? C'mon!  The outfit is SMOKIN', but the personality, the puppy dog look, the submission?  That's not the SS I know.  If she was a fierce bitch, I'd buy it, but I'm definitely gonna pass.

I want to see some hot chick wearing this version this Halloween, though.  HOTT!

Did you catch Green Lantern: New Guardians #1 this week?  If not, you missed out on some strange SS action.

A Star Sapphire in the middle of a space rescue was "decommissioned" in mid-save, leaving her floating helpless in space.  Luckily her sister was there to help, but having a ring stolen and a sister hurt ENRAGED the savior!  My favorite line, "They're about to find out why I'm called Fatality!"

Before the issue, I got a Facebook comment from my fierce e-friend RaRa.  "Is that SS with the cargo pants?  I hope it's not.  The cargo pants have GOT TO GO! Even I don't wear cargo pants."

While it's not cargo pants, the vinyl body suit has a certain utilitarian quality.  I love how the neckline looks like it's zippered.  And that belt! Admit it, she is no Carol, but she is DAMN HOT!

And funny, she DOES look an awful lot like my ink.

Star Sapphire on Batman BB

Star Sapphire Saturday!

We were lucky enough last night to have the season premiere of Batman Brave & the Bold. Although the Cartoon Network had this slated to air this episode last May, they decided it would be best to launch this season off right! The episode... "Scorn of the Star Sapphire!"

Now it's very important to understand that this is the Cartoon Network and with 6pm as it's airing time slot, it it CLEARLY intended for kids. I kept having to remind myself of that as line after cheesy line poured forth from the screen. Regardless, it was a very fun episode and SS was not portrayed in a more tame light. In fact, I was kind of shocked as how aggressive they went with the character. It made me smile. Huge.


Considering they had to tame it down for the audiences, I thought the costume changes were very appropriate. And I like the way they kept with the correct storyline (Carol/Hal lovers; SS/GL enemies). Even with the pre-pubescent audience, presenting the relationship as challenging, less than perfect, and something that needs work was pretty remarkable. I'm glad they also showed that Carol could use her will to control the Star Sapphire rather than it entirely controlling her.



I'm sure my idealism, and the toned down, more "loving", Star Sapphire of recent incarnations can't last. She's a villain. That's one of the reasons I love her. But it has been nice having her as a "good guy" for a while. Maybe they can put a spin on her character like they've done with Attrocitous in Red Lantern #1. As far as I'm concerned, not picking up SS as her own series was a "miss" on the part of the New 52. I guess we'll have to see what they do with the Green Lantern: New Guardians. Looks like that may be Fatality on the cover of issue #1.

In the meantime, I'll continue to spend the weeks admiring SS and expressing my love on Saturdays, because as we all know...

Years ago, I was thrilled to see SS on the animated Justice League Unlimited series.  This week, I learned that my violet beauty would be appearing in her own episode of Batman: Brave & the Bold where the Bats and GL battle Carol in "Scorn of the Star Sapphire."

Although the animated versions never show the more risqué costuming I've come to drool over (thank you Ivan Reis and Doug Mahnke), any incarnation is precious to me.

The episode airs on Friday, September 16 at 6:00 p.m. ET on the Cartoon Network.  I already have it set to record on the DVR.

This week, my local comic shop (Mile High Comics - Glendale) had a 50% off TPB, Tshirts, statues and toys sale.  I finally had an excuse to buy that item I've had my eye on for weeks.

A Blackest Night Violet Lantern Light-Up Power Battery and Ring.

Yes, I already have the ring as part of the entire set I bought months ago, but there's something about the Power Battery I just had to have. So what if I now have two Star Sapphire rings. That's a GOOD thing!

Now, what can I use them for? Cosplay? Night light? Conversation piece at the bar on a Saturday night?

Yes, I have shelves and boxes full of action figures, statues, toys and games.  I don't plan on stopping.  And I'm hoping the Brightest Day series has a SS for my shelf.
